I sat in a barber chair that was 100 years old and the hairdresser was wearing a leather vest. He had long white and grey hair and big glasses. When he dropped the comb on the ground he opened the drawer and pulled out a new one. It was really surreal, like steampunk hair cutting.
School has been about the same, its drawing to a close and we dont have the outside subjects anymore. Some mornings I felt a bit down, but an alfajor or a hug cheered me up. Its weird thinking that I´ll have to go back soon, I do want to go, but I also want to stay to get to know everyone better, to learn more spanish, and stuff like that.

Today I spent most of the day in Abuelas house talking to Jenny and watching tv. She has an english test on monday for listening, but I couldnt help her practice as she couldnt understand my english haha. We had lunch at 4:oo today, fish pie and broccoli pie.

This morning I skypped with an exchange student in chile which was cool, the sound quality was really bad but it was fun none the less. It was funny hearing the chilean accentcompared to my accent. Ive got a birthday party tonight at 11:30 until 8:00 tomorrow, should be good fun.

I went to the regional fair on tuesday to buy presents for people, which consisted of lots of handmade wristbands, to rings, a Maté and bombilla that I bought in a shop, and a Asterix all in spanish that I bought from a roadside magazine vender. Do we have those in NZ? I have never seen them before, only in movies. They are evrywhere in Buenos aires, like every few blocks. Also venders of flowers Florists and nick nacks are in buenos aires.

I have begun to go to put spanish words in first then I have to think of the english word, which I think is a good sign. Im not thinking in spanish, well atleast not all the time, but I am very used to hearing and speaking it now. I often respond to questions that are in english in spanish now without thinking. You see before where I wrote "venders of flowers"? I was going to put "de" instead of "of", I had to stop and think about how to say it. Oooohh now I remember, ok im gonna change it to Florists.

Im gonna miss the food hear, the dulce de leche and the asados and the milanesas and the empanadas and the medialunas. And my friends to of course.

I really need to learn to dance the way they do hear, when they dance together. Its terribly embarrassing when someone invites me to dance with them I have no idea how.

I made this video to demonstrate my hair cut, and I thought it was hilariously funny, although you may not.

The parents of one of my exchange friends here forgot her birthday, which was quite bizzare. Im glad I dont have my birthday here

well that blog was filled with snippets, enjoy! Like pocorn, or Tv.

Chau besos!
The trip north was amazing. We stayed a night in a hotel in Buenos aires, then took a 20 hour bus ride to Iguazu Missiones where we stayed in a relatively nice hotel. The first day when we arrived I went out to explore the town with some friends, and then we almost got lost following Thaddeus’ sense of direction, which was surprisingly accurate. We ended up one street away from where we wanted to be when we had to ask for directions.

We went to the falls the next day, which were amazing. No I actually think I got some good ones though. After that we took a long boardwalk out to the “Gargantea del Diablo” which means Devil’s throat, it’s like a valley, but of water falls. A card game played with Spanish cards and very fun. It has a funny way of valuing the cards, and you don’t play with 8’s or 9’s; Once you have learnt them you can use signals to tell your teammate/s what cards you have, and bluffing is an important part of it. I would love to teach people in New Zealand to play, but I have no idea how I shall teach them. Uncle Ken would like it.

We went to brazil the next day to see the falls from that side. It was amazing at one point we could look out from the bus and see three different countries – Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. The Brazilllian side was more scenic and landscapish, save for one awesome board walk that went out across the river in the middle of a step like structure of falls, so we had water falls on three sides of us and it was amazing. There was a lot of water vapor in the air; I had a moment of walking at the beginning and the end of rainbow at the same time, which was very very cool.

That day some of also went to a bird park which was awesome. Then we went to the gift shop, which was filled with amazing rock creations, however I wasn’t too interested in lugging geological gifts around for the next 6 days so I only bought one thing, for Grandma. On the whole thats not really dissapointing, argentina is pretty big. They must be hiding somewhere

Well right now Im typing this from my sisters´ apartment in buenos aires. The city is really really really quite huge. I cant walk alone, I would get utterly lost. I have taken a subway! this was a really amazing experience for me. Ahhh far out I dont even know what to write, my tenses feel all confused in english.

We had my sisters 19th birthday party on saturday night in the apartment. It was quite fun, a little bit weird when I couldnt understand stuff. Met some cool people however and yea it wasnt too bad.
What was better was friday night when we went out to a fancy pants restaurant. There was two big starter self serve things, filled with cold delicacies of all kinds. You went up and took a plate, then went round taking what you wanted. Once you returned to your seat and ate however much you wanted to eat from your plate, if you felt like more, you could just get up and grab another plate. Waiters went around clearing up the finished plates while you were gone. There was a ton of food that I didnt really want, but I tried caviar, which is not really that nice. After that came the MEAT. The waiters walk around with big swords that have Large pieces of meat skewered onto them, serving to whoever looks ready to eat meat. It was pretty cool, but they all dissapeared at one point and it was like, Im still hungry!. Then we had dessert which we picked from a menu, and afterwards had a kinda small cake thing for Maru and champagne for a toast.

Im writing this from wednesday now, and have photos! so instead of wrting all about what I did today I´ll put up photos with not so much writing. Woo! I still need to put up a few more, but later!
We went to a place about an hour away called miten (or something like that, it sounded like miter ten crunched together) we went there to artificially insemnate sheep, which was quite an experience. It wasn´t nearly as horrible as I thought it would be, but I wouldnt recomend it for a fun sunday afternoon. The bus ride was awesome fun though. We stopped at a shop and everyone bought biscuits or lollies or drink, and everyone shared (as theydo in argentina) so itwas like a big bus picnic. The teacher bought facturas as well, it was really cool.

At school maths is a little difficult as I cannot understand the explanations very well, and I cant read the teachers writing. However he has a "buena onda", which literally translates as "good wave", and sounds cooler when you say it in spanish. I get really tired when the teachr is just talking, big long talks, it just overloads me and I can hardly stay awake. The food at school is pretty average, today was graesy warm pasta noodle with lame cheese and cherry chewing gum flavoured pudding thing. Haha when Fede from Italy was explaining "gelatino" to me and Ava a while back when our spanish was worse, because he didnt know the word jelly in english he said it was "Pudding, but with more pudding". What an awesome way to describe it.

I went to two parties last weekend. The first one was horrible, all outside and freezing. There was one fire, but not nearly big enough or well enough maintained. Every one was drunk, and some people started smoking well, pipes. This is pretty common in el bolson with the large hippie population, but I do not often hang out with that group. I finally went home at the early hour of 4:oO in the morning, not wanting to go dance that night. The next night the party was far better, it was the birthday of a guy I met outside "Barr" who was friends with a guy from new zealand and was really into electronic and dancing. He had the speakers insanely loud and the bass distorted it incredibly, but it was good fun. At one point I saw a door open in the room and an elderly lady peer out, and that was quite bizzare. I made some friends and had a good time, later we went to the club "life" and danced some. Did some shuffling and my friend did his kind of shuffle flogger thing, its an argentine subculture style. The man at the door was like "che, el es un flogger" which means "hey, he´s a flogger" When I went to enter, It must be the jeans. His cousin is the 3rd best flogger dancer in the world so my friend told me. I went to catch the bus at 6 but it didnt arrive till 7 so we chatted for awhile about argentine stuff

Today after school I went to visit a girl from alaska. She lives half the year in argentina and half the year in Argentina, I met her in the hairdressers with her Mum. My host Mum gave me directions for a shorter way to get to her house, that there was a cabin looking thing to side, and a big house close and other smalle cabins on the same land. That seemed pretty precise, and when I arrived at the street ALL HOUSES LOOKED LIKE THAT. I asked a man leaving to go for a walk or something where the alaska girl lived, turns out she was his neighbour, so that was sweet as. We talked and watched the simpsons movie, then I biked home with minimal bother from neighbourhood dogs. I nearly ran one over though, but thats because it was sitting in the middle of the road in the dark.

I am not without teeage company here which is great. The Daughter of ABuelas helper sometimes looks after her after school and in weekends so I see her all the time, for ages I thought she was like 20 or something, then found out she´s only 16. Its cool having friends who dont speak english, I feel so pro at spanish. I still have miles to go though.

My host Mum told meabout when there was that volcanic explosion in chile, it was only abotu 100 ilomtres fomr where we are, she said the ground shook and for days afterwards the air was filled with ash, they had to wear masks. It sounded like a real experience, it seems like there is a lot of natural disasters occuring lately.

Luna is pissing every where, we are trying to teach her to go outside, but I dont know, sometimes she just decides to let it out in a little puddle and wait untill someone finds it.I bought some new shoes and thank goodness she doesnt seem to be interested in them. They are just white, I am drawing on them with a marker pen. The hard part is that I cant draw an outline in pencil first, for whateve reason it doesnt take pencil, so I must draw and hope I dont mess it up.

It seems like now I can thinkof un monton of things to write about, but I dont want to make this too long or write all night. More the latter. Also I am itching to write this is spanish, wich I am taking as a good sign that I am learning more.

All that practice, wastedI killed the dinosaurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04087209905128124304noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2320586251838149012.post-1729975860719057722011-04-16T16:05:00.000-07:002011-04-16T16:05:59.306-07:00Not enough sleep, Pickle!, Crazy eyesWow I havent updated this nearly as soon as I should have, but its happening now allright. Yes well School has been going pretty well, Im working hard not to sleep as much during class and I think its working.

I got invited to a friends house to eat pizza and watch movies with peeps last weekend which was awesome, especially as it was a non-english speaking friend! However due to the nature of that night we didnt get much sleep, having to get up at 8 that morning to make jam and pickle didnt help. But this was a normal sleep pattern for a friday night here, so it didnt bother me. Not until another friend reminded me of the invite to the birthday party of a school mate on saturday night. I went, and it was fun and stuff, but from about 2 or 3 onwards I was insanely tired. And it was freezing, it gets so cold at night. I ended up falling asleep in this club that we had to walk halfway across town to get too. All up I learnt my lesson and will only go out one time each weekend, bar perhaps very special occasions.

Ahh at school we put sponges inside sheep. Im not going to go any further with that one.

Haete, a boy from Thailand made a tower of cups at school during lunchtime. We (the afs students) had dinner at a boarding hostel on wednesday, it was pretty cool. Haete was a big hit with his terrible spanish pronunciation and vocabulary and funny laugh. I dont know what his table was laughing about, but it was always loud and long. I watched the first episode of the new season of bleach (an anime that I like) with him the other day.

Ava has got a new family now, just a couple of blocks away from my house wich is cool. What is not cool is that on her street there is a dog with crazy eyes that barks and chases. I had to face it down the other day, so I threw a rock at it and made threatening body movements, which worked! But didnt stop it trying to sneak up on me when I had my back turned. The coward.

Last night/this morning I went out to play pool with some friends from school, then we danced until 6 and took the bus at 6:30 back to puelo. It was cool, they played reggaeton for most of the night only at 5:15 did they start to play some techno.

I will try to put some photos up of everything at a later date as I cannot right now, and need to have a siesta.

Ciao chicos, Love and miss all of you
LouisI killed the dinosaurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04087209905128124304noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2320586251838149012.post-26648247503722690932011-03-30T11:57:00.000-07:002011-03-30T11:57:17.290-07:00Blue, long weekend, salsa. GONESo well I got a small haircut, and died the tips at the front blue. It looked pretty awesome, but the dye only lasted a week and a bit.
I went to salsa classes! It was... interesting. We started off with these weird warm up exercises, but every one kept a straight face but for Tek (a girl from thailand) and me! We were the newbies so I guess they are all used to the oddness. It was really difficult to remember all the moves once we had to do them fast, and fast spanish didn´t help my comprehension. I really failed at it, and I dont think I will go back. Also I had to leave early to catch the bus, and in my rush forgot to pay (10 pesos). We had a four day weekend last week for "dia de memoria", Day of rememberance. Its to remember the people who were killed in the times when argentina was ruled by a dictator. They are remembered as the "desparecidos", the dissapeared, as it seems they were just taken by the government. There is a slogan now for the rememberance "nunca más" which means never more, or never again. From what I can tell there was a big uproar from mothers after they dissapeared, and it sparked the overthrowal of the dictator.

Maru (my host sister) Left for Buenos aires on saturday! So friday we had an asado for lunch and I made a pavlova

OHNO I THINK DELETED THE PHOTO

Oh well, moving on. That night we went to someones house where there was a party, and it was kind of fun. But people were smoking inside, and my clothes reeked afterwards. A friend from salsa was their, but she was very much better than me at said salsa. Later I we walked to Barr, the best and only club in el bolson. There are two other bars that also play loud clublike music, but they have lots of seats and tables, and friday is old music night for "El sol". I haven´t been inside the other bar called absynth, but its name hints at alot of alcohol. Dissapointedly no body fist pumps here, they all just step from side to side and dance in a way that is not fist pumping. I shuffled a little bit, but they only start playing tecno at about 5:00. Up till then its all Reggaeton and Cumbia.

Well now Maru is gone, and I have no bigger sister to take me to things and introduce me to people, or to watch movies with or whatever. But owel, I needed to stand by myself eventually. It does make the house a little lonely, but not like a haunting loneliness or anything. Ahh lots of things happen and I´m like "Oh yea, so gonna put this in my blog" and then now when I write it I can hardly think of anything. Oh but for this!
It was weird, I walked in and they were all standing in a a hall kind of place, so I stood to the side until every one started walking around to their respective classes. I got a ride to school with one of the teachers, so she showed me where to go. Luckily when I got to class Ava was there so I had someone to sit with. I can´t remember what the first class was about, although we had to do a chat thing in groups of four at the start about a bunch of different events. After that I was insanely tired and fell asleep until the end when Ava woke me up. After interval half the class (including me) went out into the forest and did various wood chopping things. Me and Pami got given machetes, and we had to chop down these small trees to clear a path. After doing that for awhile we went back to class again. Morning tea has so far been a bun with jam on it (writing from day two now) Lunch was a mince and lentil thingy, with some custard for dessert. the day starts at 8 and finishes at 4. So long! I fell asleep in first class again, but hopefully the last time. I´m getting good drawing practice in during class, as so far I havent had to do much. Today we did some more machete-ing, except this time it was blackberry bushes (did I mention they are everywhere?) and Fredrico (AFS student from Italy) used a fork to pull them away once we had chopped them. Fredrico learnt spanish incredibly fast when he arrived (6 months ago) because italian is pretty close. Lunch was pasta and cheese, and an apple afterwards. We watched a movie in the afternoon. They drink maté in class!
The class structure is really talking orientated, for one of the classes the teacher just talked, and sometimes seemed to chat with the students. The government gives every student a laptop (well not me and Ava because we are only here for half the year). Im not sure how much they learn in class, as sometimes the students dont even seem to be paying attention, but I gues because I dont speak spanish its hard to knowI killed the dinosaurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04087209905128124304noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2320586251838149012.post-33778770562775933982011-03-12T16:59:00.000-08:002011-03-12T16:59:45.884-08:00Rooster and hummingbird and bad chinese horrorThis time is not in order, Im just going to spew info onto the page until I finish.
Did I mention that I saw a humming bird in Buenos Aires?
There is this rooster somewhere in the area, and at what ever mad hour it begins to crow it sounds not unlike a man screaming. Did a good job of freaking me out in the early hours of the morning.
The other day we watched a horror movie from china with spanish subtitles. It might have been allright, except the movie was pretty lame. It was about a piece of newspaper that would appear with the obituary page, and on it would be someone who is still alive, and then they would die. Or it would have a headline on it about people dying, and then they would. It was really disconnected, like there was one guy who appears to have spontaneaously combusted because he changed what the newspaper said would happen, and some phsycic takes photos of things that aren´t. I think it ended well, but I couldnt actually tell. We went to the lake again the other day (we always go to the lake) and while we were there met up with the an american exchange student called Thaddeus and some Argentine guys who I didnt know (but do kind of now I gues). We played this fun game called Truco, its a cross between "snap" and "strip jack naked" (Thats what I grew up calling it. Seriously. If you know any different names I´m all ears)There are hippies in el bolson. They sit in groups and play guitar and smoke. Heaps of people smoke here though, all the time. Its kind of gross, but something I will have to get used too.
Sergio made me an omelete today, It was amazing. Just egg and cheese, but the cheese is different here; far more soft and melty.
I have discovered how true it is that you dont know what you have until its gone e.g sliced bread, sliceable cheese, paved roads and vegemite. Im sure I will be able to add other things to the list through my exchange
Thanks for reading! I am pained by my lack of ability to write this as well as other blogs I have seen, but I hope just telling what has been going on will be enough
Miss you all and Love you all!
I went into Bolsón with Maru and Marcy to go to the feria regional (regional fair)

Bought some empanadas! om nom nom nom nom. Then went to the pharmacy and I saw some afs kids outside, so I went and walked around el bolson with them. Maria let me borrow the book "che boludo" which is a spanish dictionary for slang. We walked around and stuff, then Maru came along and after a little while we had to catch the bus back to Puelo. We were on the bus maybe two minutes when Maru got a Text from Daña to wait for her, so we got off and met up with her, then walked around some more, met up with some other girl who I can´t remember her name, then we (finally) went to cathc the bus. Now, this whole monologue has been leading upto one thing. While we were waiting for the bus, this guy came along with a BABY ARMADILLO! AHHHH :D n_____n it was so cool! :( I didn´t have my camera on me, so I couldn´t take any photos. Well while we were taking the bus back we were looking at the forest fire (There had been a forest fire going for like a day) and when we got back to puelo, the lights were off. And the water. But it was allright, because I had to pack up my stuff anyway and go to Bolson, because it was to dangerous to stay in Puelo. So we stayed at some peoples house, I don´t know who they were, but they were nice. For tea (at like 11) we had empanadas! THey buy them like we would buy fish and chips! I slept in the son´s room, he was 15 (but looked 16). The next morning I had my first Maté! It didn´t taste very nice, just like tea, but I drunk (tomo = I take, but thats the word that is used) it anyway. We returned to Puelo, and the power went out, and has been going on and off eversince. Because of the fire I didn´t have school, so that night we went out to Bolson to the club ( clubs are called Boliches) It was pretty fun, that night was electro night. The music was very loud and you had to shout to talk to anyone. Seeing as I don´t speak much spanish this made it really hard to comunicate, but Maru was there to interpret. Not many people danced, but there was a group and one guy tried to shuffle. He wasn´t very good, I dont think that he knew how. After watching his efforts for and hour or so I got up and showed them how to really shuffle. In the club I met lots of people, but I cannot remember for the life of me what their names were. The same thing happened when we went outside (minus the shuffling). There was a guy who could speak english, but he was a little drunk. He imparted his advice on how to learn spanish "I´ll tell you the truth, the only way to learn spanish is to talk to women, because then you remember it" and also told me that I was going to save the world. He was a nice guy though. When we finally went back to Puelo it was, well really late, so late it was early, but not too early. Around the time I usually wake up on thursdays. Later that day we went to the lake, and just chilled, doing lake stuff. I am tired all the time here, and keep having small naps. They drink alot of coke and other fizz drinks here, I hope my teeth will be okay. I am missing everybody in New zealand. Ahh I am tired again.

Bye all

I will tell you all about 1: the flight 2:the orientation and 3: El Bolosn y lago puelo

1: In auckland we met the afs volunteers, then we waited for ages until everyone had arrived. During that time we just talked about random stuff. Then we went to check in and (after standing in line for ages) we went upstairs. There is so much in auckland airport that I never even knew was there! We flew with aerolíneas argentinas. The flight was 11 hours long, they turned the lights off for what felt like 9 of them. They had one tiny movie screen at the front of the plane, then others at regular intervals behind me. The movie they played was "bow wow", but it was boring and the contrast on the screen made everyone who was black bright yellow. At one point I got up to go to the toilet, but when I came back out the air hostess was serving the meal, so I had to wait for something like 20 minutes standing in the aile, waiting for her to finish serving everyone before I could get to my seat. I was sitting beside a youngish guy on my left, and on my right a girl called Georgia from buenas aires who was travelling back from australia. She spoke some english, so I got to practice my spanish and her her english and we had the mean chat. Once we landed we went through customs, but there was this one grumpy customs guy (luckily I didn´t get him, but Matthew did.) who spoke spanish very fast. We waited for awhile to get our bags, there was a really long bag collecting thing (I cant remember what they are called) but not many people were at the airport, it was really empty.

2: we were split into two groups, one went to one place and we went to another place for orientation. In my group was Matthew, Rachel, Abby, Lizzie and me. We were the first ones to arrive. Lizzie Matthew and Abby went to bed, and me and Rachel walked around the place to see what it was like. I will put photos up later, but it was kind of middle eastern, and like a labryinth. 30 thais arrived that night, and two australians as well. Ahh we did so much it was intense, Breakfast was croissants and buns and stuff, dulce de leche (which is like condensed milk), jam, and cornflakes. Also before lunch Anna from Switzerland arrived. At lunch time we had chips and snitzel, then jelly. During lunch the Austrians and Germans arrived, and at three the americans arrived. We did acticities and stuff for the rest of the day and the next day, aswell as having lots of time off which was awesome! Talking to the americans about all the stuff they have and we don´t and vice versa. I started to talk in an american accent which sucked! I dont want to be american! New Zealand accent is so much cooler! The people from Austria and Germany were cool. I learnt to say schvimmen (swimming)
so, I can pretty much speak german now. It was sad to say bye to everyone at the end, they were great people. Haha my friend Katherine from chicago LOVES New Zealand, it was cool haha. There was so much coke! at luchtime and at dinner time the waiter and waitresses just kept bringing out and refilling jugs of coke. Dinner is between eight and ten oclock here.

3: It was a two and a half hour flight to Barriloche and then a two hour bus ride to el bolson, then 15 minutes to el bolson. I met Maria from norway at the airport, she told me alot about el bolson and being an exchange student. Lago puelo is bigger than ranfurly, well it has more shops anyway. Today I woke up, and after awhile I got a ride to the lake when Maru and her friend Dana went to work. They both work at places near the lake. It was nice. There were some people learnin to scuba dive, and some guy fly fishing with no top on. Then it was hot and I was tired so I went back. But I had to walk back. It took like half an hour, in the boiling sun, and then I couldn´t figure out which street was Callejon Bertoni because they didn´t have street name signs. So I walked up and down a couple of them, then asked a little girl who was walking by (I felt so pro at spanish). It was a street I had allready walked up haha. Sorry, reading back over the blog the writing is really boring, but I am tired and over loaded so yea. There is a Forest fire here! It was really intense and some people had to leave their homes. I am safe though, we are on the other side of the wind. Well, until later, hasta luego
